Do you need to buy file cabinet dividers?
After all, filing cabinets, by their very nature, are supposed
to organize files and documents. You’d think that cabinet
dividers aren’t an absolute necessity. Then again, for some
people with numerous files, there may be a real need for this
filing cabinet accessory.
Documents can easily get out of hand even if
you have a filing cabinet. Papers and folders of various sizes
can and do accumulate through the years. If you want to keep
everything in proper order, dividers are a must. These can help
keep your files upright in a lateral filing cabinet or they can
separate sections of files in a vertical cabinet.
You can buy a variety of file dividers in
any offline or online office furniture store. Before you do
though, you might want to keep some important points in
mind.
· Take note that there are many different
types of dividers. Some are meant for only shelves and stands.
You want those that are specifically made for filing cabinets.
If you are a first time shopper, it’s easy to confuse one type
with another. If you aren’t sure about an item, take the time
to ask about it.
· Lateral filing cabinets typically come
with their own dividers. You may not need to purchase these
accessories separately. These however are among the top
features you should check when you buy a filing cabinet. You
would want dividers that can be adjusted and that won’t make it
difficult for you to keep your files according to their
document sizes.
· Even if some cabinets have their own file
cabinet dividers, you might want to get a couple of extra
pieces. If this is the case, you’d have to take note of your
cabinet brand. Similar brands tend to fit each other perfectly
so you don’t have to force an ill fitting divider in your
cabinet. Hon for example has its own Hon Company lateral file
divider while Schwab sells its own 23-6378 movable divider for
lateral files.
· Divider types depend on cabinet types.
They are however, most often used for lateral cabinets. You may
however be able to find topic dividers for vertical filing
cabinets. One other type of divider according to cabinet type
is the flat divider. Safco flat file drawer dividers are
examples of this type. They typically go in between paper files
that are laid flat on the drawer bottom.
· Adjustability and flexibility may be
important qualities for you. Some flat file dividers can be
easily trimmed while lateral file dividers often do not need to
be trimmed but are not fixed and can be adjusted in
position.
· Prices vary according to brand, type and
quality. You can buy dividers or sets of dividers for anywhere
between $15 to $30. Some flat dividers however can cost as much
as $130 or more.
File cabinet dividers aren’t always optional
accessories. If you have more files than you can handle they
may be a necessity.
